A recent loop:higher crude oil prices -> higher headline of inflation -> more interest rate ECB hikes -> weaker dollar -> higher crude oil prices
What about the impact of higher oil prices on consumer behavior and others?
On housing:
American like the exurban lifestyle. Before it was spending too much time driving, now it's spending too much time and money driving. This lifestyle is becoming uneconomical. In the housing market, prices are falling faster in areas requiring long commutes than in neighborhoods closer to job centers. Maybe the trend is going to become living closer in, in a smaller space.
On trade:
It is very simple that if it costs more to ship stuff, there will be less shipping.
On workplace:
More telecommuting, fewer work days.
On auto:
Less car, more public transportation. Japanese auto company is taking the advantage.
On airline:
Less business travel. Airlinsare starting to cut long-distance nonstops. Why? A lot of the fuel it carries is being burned to carry additional fuel, which makes overall fuel efficiency lower than a journey with refueling stops along the way. Of course, the later takes longer time, so the world is getting bigger. Interesting, right?
Higher oil prices are putting the brakes on globalization.
